Today, due to the rapid increase in online fraud, messaging platforms are taking even more stringent steps to protect the users. WhatsApp has taken strict action against thousands of accounts that were linked to the growing “Digital Arrest” scam targeting people across India, let’s know the complete details.
Large scale ban on fraudulent accounts
In the 12 weeks starting in January, WhatsApp banned more than 9,400 accounts in India.
These accounts were linked to the digital arrest scam, in which fraudsters impersonated officers and extorted money from people.
This action was taken in collaboration with government agencies.
Revealed during Supreme Court hearing
This was revealed by R. Venkataramani during a hearing in the Supreme Court of India.
The case focused on the growing threat of digital arrest scams.
Scam operations were being run from abroad
WhatsApp’s investigation revealed that many accounts to the scam were being operated from South-East Asia.
A large number of these accounts were found to be linked to scam centers based in Cambodia, indicating an international fraud network targeting Indian users.
How did fraudsters win people’s trust?
Scammers used fake identities and names that sounded like real officials, such as:
“Delhi Police”
“Mumbai HQ”
“CBI”
“ATS Department”
They also used government logos and profile pictures to appear genuine and avoid any suspicion.
New measures to deal with cyber fraud
WhatsApp has introduced some advanced tools to detect and block such activities.
This action was taken following a special investigation, which was based on information from the following sources:
Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Center
Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology
Department of Telecommunications
The company stressed that it is not just waiting for user complaints to deal with scams, but is taking proactive steps on its own.
