Gas Cylinder Rates: Since the outbreak of conflict involving Iran, India has been keeping a close watch on both its LPG supply and pricing, as the country imports approximately 60 percent of its LPG requirements from Western Asian nations.
LPG Cylinder Prices on April 12: Following the onset of hostilities involving the US, Israel, and Iran in February, the government hiked the prices of both domestic and commercial LPG cylinders. This price increase was driven by supply shortages resulting from disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz—a critical maritime route for global energy shipments.
India imports roughly 60 percent of its Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) and half of its natural gas requirements; since a significant portion of these fuels originates from Western Asian countries, the pressure caused by these disruptions has been felt acutely and immediately.
How Much Have Prices Risen?
Despite supply shortages in recent weeks, the government has endeavored to keep domestic LPG prices stable. The government has also consistently advised consumers to refrain from panic-booking or hoarding LPG cylinders. Meanwhile, domestic LPG prices have undergone a revision just once, whereas commercial cooking gas prices have been revised twice over the past two months—a development that has had a more pronounced impact on restaurants, eateries, and other commercial establishments.
Notably, the price of a 14.2 kg domestic LPG cylinder was hiked by ₹60 in March; however, no further price adjustments have been made since then, ensuring that domestic LPG prices remain stable across the country. Conversely, the price of a 19 kg commercial LPG cylinder was first raised by ₹144 in March, followed by a further hike of approximately ₹200 on April 1st.
