Aadhaar Card News: Aadhaar cards are being used to perpetrate fraud worth crores of rupees today. Even the Aadhaar cards of deceased individuals are being used for cyber fraud or misused in other ways.

To protect the biometric identification system, the government has deactivated more than 2.5 crore Aadhaar numbers belonging to deceased individuals.

Minister's Statement in Lok Sabha
This massive cleanup operation, aimed at maintaining an accurate database, was confirmed by the Union Minister of State for Electronics and Information Technology, Jitin Prasada, in a statement to the Lok Sabha on Wednesday. The primary objective of this cleanup is to eliminate any vulnerabilities that could lead to the misuse of personal identification.

According to the Ministry of Electronics and IT's statement, this deactivation is necessary because "when a person dies, their Aadhaar number must be deactivated to prevent identity fraud," and it also helps prevent "any unauthorized use of such Aadhaar numbers to avail benefits under welfare schemes."

Around 134 Crore Aadhaar Cards
With approximately 134 crore active Aadhaar holders in the country, maintaining the accuracy of the system is a monumental task. The government noted that the place of death registration may differ from the address mentioned on the Aadhaar card, making synchronized deactivation efforts even more crucial.

This nationwide effort is part of a larger strategy to ensure that government subsidies and services reach only living, legitimate beneficiaries.

In addition to removing outdated records, the ministry also highlighted several existing technological safeguards in place to secure the system. For example, the biometric lock/unlock feature allows users to "lock" their data, which the statement described as a significant step in "preventing any unauthorized authentication attempts."
