The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has got a big success after seven years in a famous bank fraud case in the country. The agency has arrested the accused Nasreen Taj, who has been absconding for seven years on charges of fraud of Rs 12.63 crore, from Bangalore. She had been hiding the identity by the name of Salma for a long time and was repeatedly changing her hideout to avoid arrest.

The case is to the Mandya branch of Syndicate Bank, where on 15 April 2009, a case was registered against the then branch manager Asadullah Khan and eight others for defrauding the bank through criminal conspiracy, cheating, forgery and fake documents. CBI investigation revealed that these people together planned an illegal withdrawal of about Rs 12.63 crore from the bank.

Nasreen Taj, the wife of accused Asadullah Khan, had no source of permanent income. Despite this, he fraudulently took advantage of agricultural loan of about Rs 1.2 crore and Rs 55 lakh under the facility of Temporary Overdraft (TOD). The loan amount was approved for agricultural development, but it was used to repay the TOD amount, which is an open violation of the rules.

The CBI had filed a charge sheet on 12 October 2010 in the case, in which Nasreen Taj was also described as co-reservoir. She was absconding since 2019 and several non-bailable warrants (NBW) were issued against her. In November 2021, a special court in Bengaluru also ordered the seizure and attachment of his assets.

To avoid arrest, Nasreen also broke contact with her husband and family and she was misleading the local people and employers with her real identity. She was repeatedly changing her residence and living very cautiously, due to which the agencies were facing difficulties in search of her.

The CBI technical team conducted a thorough analysis of the digital footprints of the accused and eventually traced its location using the identity tracking database. Nasreen Taj, who is living in Bangalore in Bengaluru, was arrested as soon as he was confirmed and sent to judicial custody after being produced in court.
