Vijaypura: 12 more people have been arrested for alleged robbery of gold and cash worth more than Rs 53.26 crore from the Managuli branch of Canara Bank in Vijaypura district of Karnataka. The police gave this information on Friday. These arrests were made after questioning the three accused, who were detained last month. These include former branch manager Vijaykumar Mariyala.

Vijayapura Superintendent of Police Laxman Nimbargi said that the total number of arrests has increased to 15. The police have so far recovered assets worth more than Rs 39.26 crore, including 39 kg melted gold, Rs 1.16 crore cash and five cars. Such a huge theft caused a stir in the entire state.

Bank manager was also involved in conspiracy with thieves

The theft took place on 25 May at the Managuli branch of the bank at Basavanbagewadi taluka, where Mariyala was working as the first branch manager. To hide the identity, the accused also stole the bank’s CCTV network video recorder (NVR). Because of this, the police had to struggle to catch such a huge theft. However, after much effort, the police finds the first lead in the shape of a car. This car had nothing to do with Canara Bank. But a few hours before the theft in the bank and a few hours after the theft, this car was seen hovering around the bank.

40 kg gold jewelery confirmed by bank officials

According to Nimbargi, valuable goods worth Rs 53.26 crore were looted from the bank locker, including gold jewelery and Rs 5.2 lakh cash. Police recovered 39 kg of melted gold and jewelery from the accused. Apart from this, Rs 1.16 crore cash was also recovered. The SP said, “Fifteen accused have been arrested and assets worth more than Rs 39.26 crore have been recovered. Initially Canara Bank officials said that 58.97 kg (total weight) gold jewelery was stolen. Pure weight was confirmed to be 40.7 kg due to verification by bank officials.
