Cyber experts have raised an alarm about a new wave of fraud involving fake payment apps that closely resemble genuine platforms. These apps are primarily targeting shopkeepers, merchants, and small business owners, tricking them with deceptive payment confirmations.

Cybercriminals are using apps that look exactly like legitimate UPI platforms. Here's how the scam unfolds:

• The fraudster pretends to make a UPI payment at a shop.
• The shop’s soundbox rings, mimicking the sound of a successful transaction.
• But when the shopkeeper checks their account — the payment hasn’t actually arrived.

According to a report by Deccan Chronicle, these counterfeit apps are being distributed on platforms like Telegram, and have already caused losses to several unsuspecting businesses.

Some of these fake apps:

• Simulate a full payment process.
• Display realistic payment success messages.
• Even trigger the soundbox to make it seem authentic.

As a result, shopkeepers — especially when busy — trust the soundbox instead of verifying the payment on their phones or UPI dashboards.

Cybersecurity experts are urging users to:

• Do not rely solely on soundboxes for confirmation.
