EPFO members will no longer have to go through long processes to withdraw their own money, as the Employees' Provident Fund Organization (EPFO) has prepared to launch PF withdrawal service through UPI and ATM. This service is expected to start from the end of May 2025 or early June.

This initiative by the Ministry of Labor and Employment comes after the approval of the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI). Which oversees the digital payment infrastructure in the country.

How much money can be withdrawn?

Sumita Dawra, Secretary of, the Ministry of Labor and Employment, said that employees will get instant access to their PF funds with a withdrawal limit of up to Rs 1 lakh. She told news agency ANI that by the end of May or June, members will be able to check their PF balance directly on UPI and withdraw money immediately through an automated system. They can choose their preferred bank account for transfer. The withdrawal limit of Rs 1 lakh will help members meet immediate financial needs easily.

At present, withdrawing money from PF is a complex and time-consuming process. EPFO members have to wait for a long time for approval after submitting a claim online. Which can sometimes take weeks. After connecting with UPI, members will be able to check their PF balance anytime and can also withdraw money immediately if needed.

The scope of the withdrawal option increased.

EPFO is also expanding the scope of fund withdrawal, allowing members to withdraw for housing, education, and marriage in addition to the existing provision for a medical emergency. The purpose of this expansion is to provide maximum financial flexibility to the country's workforce.

Secretary Dawra said that EPFO has improved its digital infrastructure by integrating more than 120 databases to make withdrawal easier. The time taken to process claims has been reduced to only three days, now 95% of claims are automated, and further improvements are planned.
More ease for pensioners

Recent digitalization efforts have also benefited pensioners. Since December last year, 78 lakh pensioners have been given access to withdraw their money from any bank branch. Earlier, withdrawals were limited to select bank branches.

EPFO is continuously expanding its reach, with over 7.5 crore active members and 10-12 lakh new members joining every month. Its 147 regional offices provide services to employees across the country.
