New UPI Guidelines by NPCI: A big change is going to happen soon for millions of users using the Unified Payments Interface (UPI). The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) has issued a new guideline for banks and UPI apps, which will come into effect from April 1, 2025. Under this change, banks and UPI service providers will have to update the UPI mobile number information every week, so that problems related to wrong transactions can be prevented. Apart from this, it has been made mandatory to get clear permission from the users before assigning a UPI ID.

NPCI's new guideline

The purpose of NPCI's new guideline is to make UPI transactions more secure. Often due to a change of mobile number or re-assignment to new customers, the possibility of wrong UPI transaction increased. Keeping this in mind, NPCI has instructed banks and UPI apps to update mobile numbers regularly. This will prevent errors caused by old mobile numbers and the UPI system will become safer and more reliable than before.

Strict guidelines for banks

On this, NPCI has made it clear that all banks and UPI apps will have to wait till March 31, 2025, to comply with these new rules. After this, from April 1, 2025, all service providers will also have to send a report to NPCI once a month whether they are managing the UPI ID correctly or not.

Mobile number recycling

According to the rules of the Department of Telecommunications in India, if a mobile number is not being used for 90 days, then it can be allotted to a new customer. This is called mobile recycling. When the old number is given to a new user, there may be a problem in the UPI accounts and transactions associated with it.
