UPI will not work on these mobile numbers from 1 April – Know why – Obnews
News Update | March 20, 2025 6:24 PM CST

If you use UPI payment apps like Google Pay, PhonePe or Paytm, then this news is important for you. The new rules of UPI payment will be applicable from April 1, 2025. The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) has announced that long -used mobile numbers will be unlocked by bank accounts. If your bank account is connected to a passive number, it can be deleted, which can cause problems in UPI payment.

Why NPCI took this decision?

NPCI has taken this step to prevent rising cyber fraud and technical problems. When a mobile number remains inactive for a long time, telecom companies can re -assign it to another person. If this number was earlier connected to a bank account and the new user misuses it, then the risk of fraud increases.

In addition, wrong transactions or payment may fail due to technical problems in banks and UPI systems. NPCI aims to make UPI more secure and to ensure that users do not have any inconvenience.

Why is mobile number required for UPI payment?

Your registered mobile number serves as an identity for UPI payment. When you send money to someone, the bank sends an OTP to your registered mobile number to ensure that the transaction is authorized and the money has gone to the right person.

If your number remains inactive for a long time and someone else is re-assigned, it can lead to wrong transactions or funds in the wrong direction. As a result, your money can be transferred to someone else's account.

What should you do now?
If the mobile number attached to your bank account has been inactive for a long time or has not been recharged, then you should check it immediately. To confirm whether the number is still registered in your name or not, contact your telecom provider, such as Jio, Airtel, VI or BSNL.

If your number is inactive, you should re -activate it or update your bank account with a new mobile number. This will help you to avoid any problem to UPI transaction in the future.

NPCI's new guideline
NPCI has directed banks and UPI apps to update the records of passive mobile numbers every week. This means that from April 1, 2024, banks will remove all the numbers that have not been used for a long time.

If you want your UPI payment to stay without any interruption, then update your bank and mobile number information as soon as possible.
