UPI has brought a revolution in the world of digital payment. Nowadays people are using UPI for every transaction, but now some new rules have come up to make its safety and convenience better. The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) has announced that some important changes to UPI will be applicable from 1 April 2025. If you miss on following these rules, then there may be a risk of cancellation of your mobile number. This news is necessary for every person who pays through UPI. Let us understand these new rules and know what you should do so that there is no obstruction in your digital banking.
Under the new rules, NPCI has directed banks and UPI service providers to remove the mobile numbers from their system that have been closed or have been given to a new user. This is because many times people change their old number, but forget to update it with the bank or UPI app. The result is that the money coming on the old number goes to the wrong hands. To prevent this, the list of mobile numbers will be updated every week. If your number is found to be wrong in this list, then your UPI service may be closed. This step will not only increase security, but will also reduce the possibility of wrong transactions.
NPCI has also made it clear that users will have to give clear consent to update their mobile number. The UPI apps will be given an opt-in option, which you have to choose yourself. This process will be completely transparent and is designed to avoid any kind of force. If you do not agree, your number will be removed from the UPI system. This means that you will neither be able to send nor take money. To ensure that your transaction goes on smoothly, check the registered number in your bank and UPI app. If you have recently changed the SIM card, then update it immediately.
This change is preparing to implement by 31 March 2025, and from April 1, all banks will have to report to NPCI every month. This report will include UPI ID to mobile numbers, details of active users and details of transactions. Experts say that this step is a big effort to make digital payment more safe. Given the popularity of UPI in India, it is necessary that its system remains strong and reliable. There has been a tremendous increase in the number of UPI transactions in the last few years, and along with this, there have been cases of fraud. These new rules are expected to curb such incidents.
