The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) has launched a new 'transfer out' feature for UPI LITE, so that users will be able to transfer their light balance back to the same bank account from where they loaded it. NPCI has directed all Issue Bank, PSP Bank and UPI apps to implement this facility in a circular issued on 21 February 2025. All concerned institutions must compulsorily implement this change by 31 March 2025.
What is 'Transfer Out' feature?
Through this new feature, users can transfer UPI Lite balance to their original bank account, that too disabled UPI Lite. This will give users more control over their money and small transactions will become even easier.
In addition, banks will now track the balance based on the light reference number (LRN) and match it with NPCI data, so that reconciliation can be ensured.
Big improvement in security of UPI Lite
NPCI has also made some new changes to make UPI Lite more secure:
Now in the UPI app, passcode, biometric verification or pattern-based lock will be mandatory to activate the UPI Lite.
This will help prevent fraud and strengthen the safety of user data.
However, apart from these changes, no changes have been made in the existing guidelines of UPI Lite.
What is UPI Lite?
UPI Lite is a special payment feature, which allows fast and safe payment without a PIN for small transactions of less than ₹ 500. This makes UPI transactions faster and easier than before.
In October 2024, RBI increased the balance limit of UPI Lite from Rs 2,000 to Rs 5,000. Also, per transaction limit has also been increased from Rs 100 to Rs 500.
Apart from this, the transaction limit of UPI 123Pay has also been increased from Rs 5,000 to Rs 10,000. These changes will make digital payment faster, easy and convenient than before.
