The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) has introduced a new rule regarding UPI Lite which will come into effect from April 1, 2025. At present, UPI Lite users do not have the facility to withdraw the remaining balance in the account, but this facility is going to start soon.

The National Payments Corporation of India i.e. NPCI issued a circular regarding this. In a circular dated February 21, 2025, NPCI has directed all its payment service provider (PSP) banks and those apps on which UPI Lite is live to activate the transfer out feature by March 31, 2025.

There was no withdrawal facility yet.

At present, UPI LITE users work in the same way, they can load money in the UPI LITE wallet, but they do not get the option to withdraw. If a person wants to withdraw any amount from UPI LITE, then he has to first deactivate his UPI LITE account. As stated on the NPCI website right now.

Lite Reference Number

The NPCI has also said that all issue banks operating on UPI Lite will have to maintain and ensure LRN (Lite Reference Number) level balance. The circular further states that UPI apps with active UPI Lite will have an app passcode, biometrics, or pattern-based lock at the time of app login. These changes are to be implemented by March 31, 2025. All other guidelines for UPI Lite will remain the same.

UPI Lite Wallet

In October last year, RBI announced to increase in the limit of UPI Lite Wallet from Rs 2 2,000 to Rs 5 thousand. UPI Lite per transaction limit was also increased from Rs 100 to Rs 500. The per transaction limit for UPI 123 Pay will be increased from Rs 5 thousand to Rs 10 thousand.
