UPI Transactions Update: The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) has announced that from 1 February 2025, the use of special letters in UPI ID will be completely banned. This step has been taken for the purpose of making the digital payment system more secure and technically standardized.
What is the new rule?
According to the circular released by NPCI on 9 January, now all UPI transaction IDs should be in alphanumeric (letters and numbers) only. If an UPI ID contains special letters like @,!, #, -, then the transaction will automatically be rejected. Although most banks and payment service providers have already followed this standard, some are still using the old format. NPCI is now going to implement this rule strictly.
What will be the effect on UPI users?
Crores of people in India use UPI for everyday transactions. In such a situation, if a user has special letters in the UPI ID and tries to pay, the transaction may fail.
For example, if your mobile number is 1234567890 and your UPI ID is connected to SBI Bank, IDs like 1234567890OkSbi will be valid, while 1234567890 @ OK-SBI ID will be invalid, because @ and—is used in it.
How to avoid failure of transactions?
Update UPI app – Update your bank or payment service provider's UPI app in the latest version. The new update includes necessary technical changes and safety reforms.
Check UPI ID – If there is a special letter in your ID, then get it corrected as soon as possible.
Contact with customer help – If you have doubts about the validity of your UPI ID, contact the customer service center of the concerned app.
Use only reliable apps – Use only the UPI apps downloaded from apps such as Google Play Store or Apple App Store following NPCI guidelines.
Historical growth in UPI transactions
According to NPCI, UPI has become India's most popular digital payment medium. In December 2024, the UPI transaction reached a record level of 16.73 billion, which is 8% higher than the previous month.
This decision to ban special letters is an important step towards making UPI Ecosystem more secure, reliable and organized. UPI users should check their ID in time and be prepared for this change, so that any inconvenience can be avoided.
