A video of a Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) fan dipping the team’s jersey in the Sangam at Maha Kumbh this year has split the internet. The loyalty and devotion of sports fans know no bounds as they can often go to massive extents for the success of their favourite teams. Amid the spiritual buzz of the Maha Kumbh in Prayagraj, a cricket fanatic showcased his passion for the three-time Indian Premier League (IPL) finalists. In a now-gone viral video on Instagram, he is washing the jersey in the holy waters, supposedly for the team’s triumph in the upcoming edition of the franchise tournament. In the “Maha Kumbh Mela, Forever RCB," the post read.
The video began with the fan holding the RCB shirt with a sadhu beside him. Before sinking the shirt, he paused to take a click with the sadhu, as if securing his divine blessings. The man then dipped the jersey in the sacred confluence of the holy rivers – Ganga, Yamuna and Saraswati three times. He lifted the shirt in the air before throwing his right hand up as a celebration move. The clip ended with the fan walking towards the river bank with the cricket jersey in his hand.
Fans couldn’t help reaction to the RCB supporters’ antics in the post’s comments section. One of them wrote, “Off-field impact player for RCB."
Another added, “RCB Men’s team – Eh Sala Cup Namde."
One wrote, “After Kumbh snan(bath) nobody can stop RCB."
“Not RCB jersey! Players need to take a holy dip in the Mahakumbh," wrote one more.
While many fans were elated by the RCB supporter’s gesture, others deemed his actions to be rather unnecessary. “Please don’t do all this nonsense," one wrote.
“This is not the place," wrote one more.
RCB has one of the biggest fanbases in the country. Big names like AB de Villiers, Chris Gayle and Virat Kohli have donned the franchise’s jersey. Despite boasting a star-studded squad throughout its history, RCB failed to secure IPL glory since the T20 tournament’s introduction. They have reached the finals thrice in 2009, 2011 and 2016. RCB made the playoff stage in last year’s edition under Faf du Plessis’ captaincy before losing to Rajasthan Royals in the Eliminator. With a revamped squad, they will be pushing for the trophy once again in IPL 2025.
