Obnews Tech Desk: Nowadays cyber criminals are trying to cheat people by adopting new methods. One of these new methods is the “jumped deposit” scam. It especially targets UPI users. In this scam, a special strategy is adopted to steal money from people's bank accounts. Let us know how this scam works and ways to avoid it.

What is “Jumped Deposit” Scam?

Under this scam, scammers first deposit a small amount of ₹ 1,000 to ₹ 5,000 in your account. Seeing this amount, the user thinks it is a reward and opens his banking app to check it. As soon as the user checks the balance by entering his PIN, the scammers send a fake withdrawal request. The user unknowingly accepts it and the scammers withdraw a huge amount from his account.

How does the account become empty?

The specialty of this scam is that people share their bank details fraudulently. The user thinks he is just checking the balance, but in reality he is approving the withdrawal request. Before the user realizes this, his account becomes empty.

Ways to avoid this scam

  • Ignore unknown deposits: If money is deposited in your account without any notice, do not check the balance immediately.
  • Contact Bank: In case of unexpected deposits, inform your bank immediately.
  • Be careful when entering your PIN: Don't enter the correct PIN the first time.
  • Keep OTP and PIN confidential: Do not share your sensitive information with anyone.
  • Respond thoughtfully: Understand the situation before checking the balance.
