The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) has removed the UPI user onboarding limit for WhatsApp Pay with immediate effect. With this decision, WhatsApp Pay can now provide UPI services to its entire user base in India. This change is a significant step for WhatsApp Pay, which will enable it to expand its reach in the digital payments system in India and offer more comprehensive services to users.

Earlier NPCI had allowed WhatsApp Pay to increase its UPI user base in a phased manner, but now NPCI has issued a notification completely removing all user onboarding limits on WhatsApp Pay. WhatsApp Pay will have to ensure that it complies with all the existing UPI guidelines and related circulars that apply to current third-party application providers (TPAPs).

WhatsApp has over 500 million users in India, making it one of the largest messaging platforms in the country, although regulators had until now restricted its in-app payments service, WhatsApp Pay, to just 100 million users.
