UAN number is a universal account number issued by EPFO. This number is of 12 digits. Every EPFO has a unique UAN number. In a way, it works like a bank account number. This number helps in withdrawing from EPFO funds and transferring EPFO accounts.

Does the UAN number have to be changed?

EPFO shared a post on social media X regarding this. According to this post, if you change jobs, then you do not need to change the UAN number. Only one UAN number is issued on an EPF account. If a member has two EPFO accounts, then he has to merge these accounts. Actually, according to the rules of EPFO, every employee should have only one PF account.

If someone has two UAN numbers, then he has to go to the EPFO portal and transfer the previous UAN service to the current UAN.

Keep the UAN number active.

The Ministry of Labor and Employment has started a campaign in collaboration with the Employees' Provident Fund Organization (EPFO). According to this campaign, all employees have to keep their UAN number active. If the UAN number is not active, then the EPFO member may face problems. However, EPFO had given the deadline to keep the UAN number active as 30 November 2024, which has now passed. If you have not activated your UAN number yet, then you should contact the employer or EPFO office once.
