In today's time, no financial transaction can be done without PAN and Aadhar card. Similarly, we also need documents like a Voter ID card and Passport for many other works. Apart from our identity card, these documents are also used as address proof. Therefore, almost every person has most of these documents.
But if someone dies, then what happens to these documents? Do these documents get canceled automatically or do the relatives of the deceased have to get them canceled? Let's know about it today.
Aadhaar card
After the death of a person, the family of the deceased should take special care to ensure that his Aadhar card is not misused. The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) currently does not have any process to cancel or surrender the Aadhar card of the deceased. But the relatives of the deceased can lock his Aadhaar.
To lock the Aadhaar card, first, they have to go to the official website- www.uidai.gov.in.
After visiting the website, select 'My Aadhaar' and then click on 'Aadhaar Services'.
After this step, click on Lock/Unlock Biometrics.
There, you have to enter the 12-digit Aadhaar number and the given captcha code.
Then select the option of Send OTP. By doing this, an OTP will come to the registered mobile number, and enter it.
After doing this, you will see the option to lock/unlock the biometric data.
On clicking the Lock option, the biometric data of the deceased will be locked.
Apart from this, if the deceased was taking advantage of any government scheme or subsidy and it is linked to Aadhaar, then the concerned department should be informed about it. So that the name of the deceased can be removed from that scheme.
PAN card
PAN card is needed in many works, from filing returns to opening a demat account. After someone's death, his family members should surrender the PAN card of the deceased. To do this, they will have to contact the Income Tax Department. PAN card is linked to bank accounts. Therefore, before surrendering the PAN card, all the accounts of the deceased should be transferred to another person's name or closed. After surrendering the PAN card, there may be a problem in getting this work done.
Voter ID
A person gets the right to vote only through his voter ID. After the death of a person, his family members can cancel the voter ID card of the deceased. To cancel it, one has to go to the election office and fill out Form-7. After which this card is canceled. To cancel the voter ID, the death certificate of the deceased can be asked from the family.
Passport
Like the Aadhar card, there is no process to cancel or surrender the passport. But every passport is valid only for a fixed period, after which its validity expires. Therefore, the family members should keep the deceased's passport safe until its validity expires, so that no one can misuse it.
