State Bank of India (SBI) has issued this big statement amid the ongoing diplomatic tension between India and Canada. The bank has said that it is not facing any problem in conducting its activities in Canada. A top bank official of the bank has said this. SBI Chairman CS Shetty said that SBI, which has been providing banking services in Canada since 1982, is seen as a 'local bank' by all the stakeholders in the North American country.

The chairman of the company said this

Shetty said that we have not seen any change in attitude among regulators or customers, it is business as usual. SBI operates eight branches in Canada through its wholly owned subsidiaries in cities such as Toronto, Brampton and Vancouver. The SBI chairman said, 'I think we are considered one of the local banks there – our involvement in the business, the banking business matches the local environment there.'

Why does tension continue between the two countries?

Relations between India and Canada have been going through difficult times for the last one year. Last year, Canada had accused India of conspiring to murder some of its citizens. Tension escalated to such an extent that relations reached a new low with the expulsion of diplomats last month. Meanwhile, Shetty said SBI will focus on expanding its core interest income.

PM Trudeau has also accepted

For the first time after the ongoing dispute between India and Canada, Canadian PM Justin Trudeau has admitted that Khalistani supporters live in Canada. In a statement during Diwali celebrations at Parliament Hill, Trudeau acknowledged the presence of Khalistan supporters in Canada, but quickly added that they do not represent the entire Sikh community.

He also said that similarly in Canada, there are supporters of Prime Minister Modi's government, but they do not represent all Hindu Canadians. Following Trudeau's allegations of possible involvement of Indian agents in Nijjar's murder in September last year, relations between the two countries have come under severe strain and are showing no sign of abating.
