EPFO New System Update: The new system's pilot run was successfully conducted on October 29 and 30, 2024, in Jammu, Srinagar, and Karnal, where ₹11 crore in pensions was distributed to over 49,000 pensioners for October.
EPFO CPPS PENSION FACILITY: This is positive news for EPFO account holders and private sector employees. From January 1, 2025, pensioners covered under the Employees’ Provident Fund Organization (EPFO) pension scheme can withdraw their pensions from any bank branch across India. This new system is set to benefit over 78 lakh EPS pensioners.
In September, the Central Government approved the Centralized Pension Payment System (CPPS) for the Employees’ Pension Scheme, 1995. This system allows pension to be received from any bank branch nationwide, enhancing ease of access. As part of the CPPS pilot run for October, ₹11 crore was distributed as pension to over 49,000 EPS pensioners in Jammu, Srinagar, and Karnal. Labor and Employment Minister Mansukh Mandaviya announced this update.
Benefits of the New CPPS System
Once CPPS is fully implemented, pensioners won’t need to transfer their Pension Payment Order (PPO) if they relocate or change their bank or branch, as they can withdraw their pension from any branch nationwide.
The current pension system is decentralized, with each EPFO regional office arranging with just 3-4 banks. CPPS will centralize this process, eliminating the need for in-person verification and ensuring pensions are directly credited to pensioners' accounts upon release. With this system, pensioners will be able to receive their pension from any bank or branch in the country.
Overview of the CPPS System
CPPS will streamline pension distribution across India, removing the need to transfer PPOs even if the pensioner changes location or bank branches. This will be particularly beneficial for pensioners who return to their hometowns after retirement. The CPPS system will be fully operational by January 2025, part of EPFO’s Centralized IT Enabled System (CITES 2.01) modernization project. This new system aims to improve services for EPS pensioners and is expected to benefit over 78 lakh pensioners by making pension withdrawals simpler and more accessible.
