For the past five years, Govinda has stayed away from acting. The actor was last seen in the 2019 film which tanked at the box office.
The circumstances were such that the actor movie was unable to make even Rs 1 crore in revenue. Govinda, who exercised total control over Bollywood in the 1990s, hasn't been near the big screen since the release of his last film. He had directed multiple consecutive blockbuster movies. His celeb status was, however, unmatched by any other, but eventually, Govinda's movies began to lose money.
The film we're talking about destroyed Govinda's career, which is also why he has been away from the theatres for the past five years. The superstar played double roles in the 2019 film, directed by Sikandar Bharti and produced by Pahlaj Nihalani. The movie was not a box office success, despite the actor and producer's confidence that it would be a hit from the day it opened.
The movie we're talking about is Rangeela Raja where Govinda played two roles. He portrayed Raja Vijendra Pratap Singh, a womanizing business tycoon. He also played the role of Yogi Ajay Pratap Singh at the same time. The movie was not well received by the public, however. Made for Rs 19 crores even with its strong box office performance, the movie was unable to recoup its expenses. Bollywood Hungama claims that the movie's lifetime receipts came to a mere Rs 19 lakh, while its opening box office account was barely Rs 5 lakh. Govinda has not had a film released in theatres ever since 'Rangeela Raja' failed.
The Tamil movie Netrikan, which starred Rajinikanth, was remade as Rangeela Raja. Although the 1981 original was well-praised at the time of its release, Rangeela Raja was criticized for attempting to capitalize on an out-of-date tale that is no longer relevant to today's youth. It was said that Govinda's depiction of a middle-aged womanizer was almost sexist. The movie was originally scheduled to come out with Thugs of Hindostan, starring Aamir Khan and Amitabh Bachchan, but it was delayed because of censorship issues.
The majority of critics felt that Govinda was stuck in a time warp, unable to move past the 1990s and adapt to the new sensibilities of the 2010s, as seen by the dismal reception of his solo films throughout this decade.
