Govinda has not had a film released in theatres ever since 'Rangeela Raja' failed. The Tamil movie Netrikan, which starred Rajinikanth, was remade as Rangeela Raja. Although the 1981 original was well-praised at the time of its release, Rangeela Raja was criticized for attempting to capitalize on an out-of-date tale that is no longer relevant to today's youth. It was said that Govinda's depiction of a middle-aged womanizer was almost sexist. The movie was originally scheduled to come out with Thugs of Hindostan, starring Aamir Khan and Amitabh Bachchan, but it was delayed because of censorship issues. The majority of critics felt that Govinda was stuck in a time warp, unable to move past the 1990s and adapt to the new sensibilities of the 2010s, as seen by the dismal reception of his solo films throughout this decade.
