Aadhaar number biometrics locking/unlocking is a service that allows an Aadhaar holder to lock and temporarily unlock his/her biometrics. UIDAI has provided this facility with the aim of strengthening the privacy of the resident's biometrics data.

Who should lock Aadhaar number biometrics and when

Aadhaar number holders who have registered mobile number can lock their biometrics. This facility is aimed at strengthening the privacy of resident's biometrics data. After locking biometrics, if a UID is used to invoke any authentication service using biometric modality (fingerprint/iris/face), a unique error code '330' will be displayed, indicating that the biometrics are locked and the entity will not be able to perform biometric authentication.

How can Aadhaar biometric data be locked?

Aadhaar biometric data such as fingerprint, iris and face can be locked by the card holder as a biometric modality. After locking the biometric, the Aadhaar holder will not be able to perform Aadhaar authentication using the mentioned biometric modality.

What happens if Aadhaar biometric is locked?

Locked biometrics ensures that the Aadhaar holder will not be able to use biometrics (fingerprint/iris/face) for authentication, it is a security feature to prevent any kind of biometric authentication. It also ensures that no entity can perform biometric based Aadhaar authentication for that Aadhaar holder in any way.

How to lock/unlock Aadhaar biometrics?

Once the resident enables the biometric locking system, his/her biometric remains locked unless the Aadhaar holder chooses any of the options given below:

- Visit myaadhar.uidai.gov - Lock/Unlock Aadhaar Biometrics - Read the utilities to lock/unlock Aadhaar biometrics and how it works, then click on Next - Select whether you want to unlock biometrics permanently/temporarily - Click on the consent box.

Before proceeding to lock/unlock Aadhaar, please generate a 16 digit Virtual ID (VID). Once your VID is generated, please come back to this page and lock your Aadhaar with your VID, then perform authentication with your VID whenever required, as the use of your Aadhaar number for authentication will be disabled after locking.
