The well-known actor Manoj Bajpayee spoke about the casting restrictions he has, especially with respect to jobs involving wealth. He observed that, in spite of his versatility as an actor, filmmakers continue to pass him up for roles involving high society. He acknowledged, “I am never considered for high-society roles,” pondering the typecasting that sometimes prevents performers from pursuing a variety of characters.
Bajpayee noted that Zubeidaa (2001), directed by Shyam Benegal, was the only film in which he had a rich role. He said, “That was Shyam Benegal’s conviction,” to the Bombay Times. He thought that genuine maharajas were just regular people, not Greek gods. For those who do not know, Jodhaa Akbar stars Hrithik Roshan, who is often referred to as Bollywood’s “Greek God,” as the Mughal Emperor Akbar.
He also spoke about the short but unforgettable part he had as a politician in Veer-Zaara (2004), which Yash Chopra cast him in after seeing his performance in Pinjar (2003). “These filmmakers were able to see life up close, which gave them that vision,” Bajpayee said, highlighting the necessity for filmmakers to reject clichés.
Manoj Bajpayee, the National Award-winning actor known for movies like Satya, Shool, and Gangs of Wasseypur, has mostly been linked to stories of the middle class and lower middle class. “No director could think of me as a rich guy, barring the two stalwarts that I mentioned,” he said, expressing displeasure at the typecasting that keeps him limited. There is stereotyping like this.
Professionally speaking, Bajpayee has had a busy year, starring in three movies this year: The Fable, Silence 2, and Bhaiya Ji, in addition to the Netflix series Killer Soup. In addition, he is shooting The Family Man, his popular Prime Video sitcom, for its upcoming second season.
When he thought back on his professional decisions, he remembered a chance he had with filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali, who cast him in the film Devdas. Bajpayee declined it because he wanted to be the main actor instead. “Yes, I was offered Jackie Shroff’s role in Devdas, but I immediately said no,” the actor remarked to Sushant Sinha on YouTube. “Meri toh hamesha se ichchha thi Devdas karne ki,” I said to Sanjay. Despite the film’s popularity, he has no regrets about his choice, which shows a strong love for his work and a willingness to take on difficult tasks that align with his creative vision.
