Bollywood director Madhura Jasraj dies in Mumbai

Early on Wednesday morning, filmmaker Madhura Jasraj, who was the daughter of the illustrious cinema figure V. Shantaram and the widow of the well-known classical performer Pandit Jasraj, died away at her residence.

 

She was 86 years old and had age-related health problems. According to family spokesperson Pritam Sharma, she is survived by her children Shaarangdev Pandit, daughter Durga Jasraj, and four grandchildren.

The lifeless remains of Madhura Jasraj are stored in her Versova residence, from where the funeral procession will depart at around 3:30 p.m., with the last rituals to be conducted at the Oshiwara Crematorium.

In 2009, Madhura, who is a prolific writer, filmmaker, producer, and choreographer, created the renowned documentary “Sangeet Martand Pandit Jasraj” in memory of her late spouse.

In addition to writing many books, Madhura is the author of the critically praised biography of her father, V. Shantaram, whose brother is the director Kiran Shamtaram. She made a significant contribution to other fine arts as well.

Durga Jasraj recalled her mother stating she made a huge contribution to recording and reviving her father’s and husband’s history in addition to her own.

Madhura made history in 2010 as the oldest debutante director in a feature film with her maiden Marathi film, “Aai Tujha Aashirwad,” which earned her a spot in the Limca Book of Records.

Pandit Jasraj and the late Lata Mangeshkar sang Marathi songs for the movie.

After Madhura’s meeting with Pandit Jasraj, the couple was married in 1962 and lived in Kolkata for a year before relocating to Mumbai.
