The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) on Saturday extended its free Aadhaar update scheme till December 14. Earlier this date was to end on September 14, after which a fee had to be paid for uploading documents and making changes in the profile on the 'MyAadhaar' portal.
UIDAI said in a post on social media platform 'X', "UIDAI has extended the free online document upload facility till December 14, 2024." It said that this move will benefit millions of Aadhaar number holders.
UIDAI is encouraging people to keep the documents updated in their Aadhaar, especially those who have not updated their Aadhaar card for more than a decade. They can review and modify their information if necessary.
The Aadhaar number is linked to personal biometrics and serves as a unique identification for every citizen of India. The system also helps in identifying and removing fake or pseudo identities. People have been appealed to update the documents on the Aadhaar card at least once in 10 years.
Any person can update his details on the 'MyAadhaar' portal through documents such as ration card, voter ID card, residence certificate, passport, and passbook. These documents can be submitted on the 'MyAadhaar' portal or at any Aadhaar enrollment center. On online submission, the person has to log in using the one-time password received on the mobile number linked to his Aadhaar number.
The UIDAI said that non-resident Indians (NRIs) can also avail of this facility. NRIs can submit documents online or by visiting the Aadhaar center whenever they are in India.
According to the UIDAI, even newborns can be enrolled for Aadhaar "by providing birth certificate and Aadhaar number of parents". But their Aadhaar biometrics must be updated between 5 and 15 years.
