England’s preparations for the 2026 World Cup have been dealt a severe blow, as defender Tino Livramento has been ruled out of the tournament following a late injury setback. The Newcastle United full-back suffered a calf injury just before the Three Lions’ opening game against Croatia, forcing manager Thomas Tuchel to make an emergency change to his squad.

The Football Association confirmed that the 23-year-old will miss the entire competition after sustaining the injury. This latest issue concludes a disappointing 2025-26 season for the Newcastle star, who was restricted to only 17 Premier League appearances due to a series of fitness problems. Earlier in the campaign, Livramento endured two separate knee injuries, a hamstring tear in January that sidelined him for 15 matches, and a thigh problem in April.

In response to the setback, England have activated their emergency replacement protocol, calling up Chelsea defender Trevoh Chalobah. Livramento, who was valued for his ability to operate effectively on both flanks, will now return to Tyneside to begin his recovery programme.

An official FA statement confirmed: “Trevoh Chalobah has been called into England’s 26-player squad at FIFA World Cup 2026 after injury sadly forced the withdrawal of Tino Livramento. Arrangements are now being made for the Chelsea defender to make the journey to the team’s basecamp in Kansas City, while the rest of the squad will head to Dallas, Texas for the Three Lions’ opening group fixture against Croatia on Wednesday. FIFA regulations allow participating teams to replace an outfield player up to 24 hours before their opening fixture. Newcastle United defender Livramento picked up a calf injury in training on Sunday afternoon. A subsequent scan and medical assessment on Monday unfortunately confirmed he could play no further part in England’s tournament.”

Livramento’s absence leaves England’s defensive options stretched, with increased pressure on the remaining full-backs Reece James, Djed Spence, and Nico O’Reilly. Spence is currently wearing a protective facial mask, while James continues to manage recurring fitness concerns. The situation highlights the fragility of England’s defence and marks a tactical setback for Tuchel, who had placed faith in Livramento’s adaptability despite his previous injury record.

As the group stage approaches, the England coaching staff will need to swiftly integrate Chalobah into the setup. However, he is not expected to feature in the opening match against Croatia in Dallas. With subsequent games against Ghana and Panama scheduled in quick succession, building a stable backline without Livramento’s versatility will be vital to maintaining momentum and securing qualification for the knockout rounds.

England’s World Cup campaign now faces an early test of depth and resilience, as Tuchel’s side seek to overcome adversity and make a strong start in their pursuit of global glory.
