A girl was allegedly raped and murdered on her way home from school. Police have confirmed three boys were arrested on Tuesday (June 16) following the reported attack.
The girl, 10, left school early because she felt unwell. However, she was reportedly ambushed by a group of boys as she walked home. They allegedly dragged her into a field before gang-raping and strangling her to death. After she failed to return home, her family notified police who found her body in the field later that night. The force launched an investigation and eventually arrested three young suspects.
As reported by the Times of India, the alleged rape and murder took place in the Barpeta district of the state of Assam in India. The attackers ambushed the girl as she walked home from school before raping and killing her in a secluded field in the area, it is claimed.
Sameeran Baishya, Barpeta Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP), said: "On the way, the accused dragged her into a jute field and gangraped her. Then they strangled her to death at the spot and left the body in the field."
He added: "The three boys have been detained after initial investigation". He continued: "Further investigation is on, and more details will be shared later."
It's reported that the girl's family raised the alarm to police after she failed to return home from school. They launched an urgent investigation and tracked down three suspects.
Police added that their investigation is ongoing but it is unclear whether they are on the look out for more suspects. They are set to share further information in the coming days.
The Barpeta district, in the state of Assam, has a population of around 1.7 million people. The district is known as the "Land of Sattras" and is a major hub for art, dance and music in India.
