TRIBUNKALTENG.COM – Here are the latest updates on the 2026 FIFA World Cup standings and full match schedule, with live broadcasts available on TVRI. Football fans in Palangka Raya, Central Kalimantan, remain optimistic that Japan will make a strong showing.
Meanwhile, in the same group, Tunisia have dismissed coach Sabri Lamouchi and appointed Hervé Renard following a crushing defeat to Sweden.
Tunisia responded to their 5-1 loss to Sweden in the World Cup by sacking head coach Sabri Lamouchi and replacing him with French manager Hervé Renard, the national federation confirmed on Monday.
The 54-year-old Lamouchi had only taken charge of the national team in January. Sunday’s heavy defeat leaves the North African side facing a tough battle to reach the last 32. Tunisia’s remaining group matches are against Japan on Saturday and the Netherlands on June 25.
Renard is a seasoned coach, having previously led Zambia and Ivory Coast to Africa Cup of Nations titles. He also managed Morocco at the 2018 World Cup and Saudi Arabia at the 2022 edition — famously defeating eventual champions Argentina — as well as France’s women’s national team. His most recent role was coaching Saudi Arabia’s men’s team.
This is not the first time Tunisia have made a coaching change mid-tournament. In 1998, Henryk Kasperczak was dismissed after group stage losses to England and Colombia, which eliminated Tunisia before their final game against Romania.
Spain made an even earlier managerial change in 2018, firing Julen Lopetegui two days before their opening group match against Portugal after he was announced as Real Madrid’s next coach.
This marks Tunisia’s seventh World Cup appearance, but the team has yet to advance beyond the group stage. Lamouchi, a former France international, previously coached Ivory Coast at the 2014 World Cup.
Japan national team supporter Rigon (33) from Palangka Raya expressed confidence that the Samurai Blue can make an impact at the 2026 World Cup.
“We all know Japan play as a collective. Their fast play should allow them to control the game from the start. But the Netherlands also pressed well and looked stronger than Japan,” he told TribunKalteng.com.
“The group is still wide open with two matches left against Tunisia and Sweden. Japan should be able to qualify from the group, at least reaching the quarterfinals,” he added.
When asked about his favourite player, Rigon quickly named Daizen Maeda.
Meanwhile, Dutch supporter Nandi (25) said he thoroughly enjoyed the high-tempo and entertaining match.
“Both the Netherlands and Japan attacked relentlessly and eventually shared the points,” he said.
Nandi felt his favourite team had the upper hand before losing focus late in the game. “They were almost there, but conceded in the final minutes — maybe just a lapse in concentration,” he admitted.
Despite the draw, he was satisfied with the Oranje’s opening performance, noting that there are still two more matches to play for Virgil van Dijk and his teammates.
“For a first match, I’m satisfied. Usually, there’s still stage fright. Hopefully, they can improve and go on to win the title,” Nandi said.
He also appreciated the local organisers for hosting public viewing events, giving Palangka Raya residents a chance to gather and enjoy the games together.
Nandi hopes such events can reach a wider audience in the future. As for his tournament predictions, he tipped four teams to go far — the Netherlands, Belgium, Spain, and Germany.
His favourite player from the match was Dutch defender Jan Paul van Hecke, whom he thought delivered an impressive performance.
Despite the draw in their opening fixture, Nandi remains confident that his team has a strong chance of progressing deep into the 2026 World Cup.
The final score between the Netherlands and Japan was 2-2. The first goal came in the 51st minute when Ryan Gravenberch crossed for Virgil van Dijk to head home for the Netherlands.
Trailing 0-1, Japan fought back and equalised through a strike from Keito Nakamura past goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen.
In the 64th minute, West Ham forward Crysencio Summerville restored the Dutch lead with a powerful shot, making it 2-1.
Japan refused to give up and equalised again in the 89th minute, with Daichi Kamada’s header sealing the draw.
