Assam. To give new impetus to connectivity and industrial development in North-East India, the Central and Assam governments are working rapidly on big infrastructure projects. In this context, the underwater tunnel being built under the Brahmaputra river is being considered as one of the most important projects. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma ( Himanta Biswa Sarma ) has claimed that this project can prove to be a “gamechanger” for the state’s economy and transportation system.

Underwater tunnel will be built under Brahmaputra

According to CM Sarma, Numaligarh-Gohpur underwater tunnel will be built at a cost of about Rs 18 thousand crore. The project will develop beneath the Brahmaputra river and will help make mobility in the state easier than ever. The government believes that this will reduce travel time, increase trade and strengthen connectivity of remote areas.

Along with this, work is also being carried forward on projects like Guwahati Ring Road and Kaziranga Elevated Corridor, which aim to modernize the road network.

Why is the project being considered a ‘gamechanger’?

According to experts, movement between many areas in Assam has been challenging due to the huge river like Brahmaputra. The construction of the new tunnel will reduce the distance and travel time between many areas. This will not only ease the movement of people, but the industry, logistics, tourism and agriculture sectors can also get huge benefits.

The government claims that better connectivity will attract investment and the North-Eastern region will get a stronger position in the economic map of the country.

Focus on employment and industry also

The Chief Minister said that projects like Guwahati-Shilchar Expressway, Namrup Fertilizer Plant and Kamakhya Corridor are not mere construction work, but will create employment and economic opportunities for lakhs of people. The government is also talking about farmers, small businessmen and youth getting benefits from these projects.

Working together on many big projects

According to the Assam government, projects like Bihta Chariyali-Tezpur four-lane road, Guwahati Airport to Jalukbari elevated corridor, Siliguri-Shilchar Express Highway and Guwahati-Tinsukia Express Highway are also progressing rapidly. At the same time, Rs 500 crore has been sanctioned to develop Dibrugarh as the second capital.

Apart from this, work is also going on on the plan to develop a new airport in Shilchar and Rupsi Airport as a logistics hub. The government says that these projects will increase both economic activities and investment in North-East India.
