IIT Kanpur is set to launch a new four-year Bachelor of Cybersecurity program starting in the academic year 2026-27. This initiative aims to attract students interested in the field of cybersecurity, with classes beginning in July 2026 at the Wadhwani School of AI and Intelligent Systems. Notably, applicants will not need a JEE Advanced score for admission.

The selection process will involve shortlisting candidates based on their JEE Main results and any relevant experience in cybersecurity, followed by a test that includes a hackathon.

This degree program is structured to blend theoretical knowledge with hands-on experience. In the initial two years, students will focus on cybersecurity principles through coursework and laboratory training. The latter half of the program will allow students to intern with government security agencies, where they will engage in cybersecurity projects and tackle real-world security issues, thereby gaining practical insights alongside their academic learning.

Rationale Behind the Course Launch

The introduction of this program is a response to the increasing significance of cybersecurity and the demand for skilled professionals in this area. Manindra Agrawal, the Director of IIT Kanpur, emphasized that cybersecurity is vital for protecting digital infrastructure and national systems.

Integrating Theory with Practice

Nitin Saxena, Dean of the Wadhwani School of AI and Intelligent Systems, highlighted that the course is designed to merge academic learning with practical experience, equipping graduates for careers in cybersecurity. IIT Kanpur is also developing a dedicated webpage for this program, which is expected to be launched next week.
