Paying a toll is mandatory when passing through a toll plaza while traveling on national highways. It is a common belief that residents living near a toll plaza can secure a complete toll exemption simply by showing an identity card. But is this what the NHAI (National Highways Authority of India) rules actually state, or is it merely a myth? The NHAI recently addressed this on its official X handle, clarifying the reality behind the myth. Let’s find out...

**Toll-free travel for those living near toll plazas?**
In a post on its official X handle, the NHAI clarified that while many believe all locals living near a toll plaza can pass through without paying by simply showing their ID cards, this is not the case.

**What is the reality?**
The NHAI clarified that there is no provision for free travel for locals. Under the rules, eligible individuals can obtain a toll concession by purchasing a 'Local Monthly Pass' subject to specific conditions. Generally, this facility is available to residents living within a radius of approximately 20 kilometers of the toll plaza. Additionally, individual toll plazas may have their own specific rules.

**Chance to win a ₹1,000 FASTag recharge reward until June 30**
To ensure cleanliness on national highways, the NHAI has launched the 'Clean Toilet Picture Challenge,' running until June 30, 2026. Travelers are encouraged to report any unclean toilets found at toll plazas immediately. To participate, users must upload a photo (including location details) via the latest version of the 'Rajmargyatra' app and provide their name, location, vehicle registration number (VRN), and mobile number. Selected participants who provide accurate information will be rewarded with a ₹1,000 FASTag recharge.
