Canada captain Alphonso Davies has suffered a significant blow ahead of the FIFA World Cup, as he has been ruled out of his nation’s opening match against Bosnia-Herzegovina. Head coach Jesse Marsch confirmed that the Bayern Munich full-back is still recovering from a hamstring injury sustained in May. Despite the disappointment of missing their first fixture, the co-hosts remain optimistic that their star player will be able to return later in the group stage.
Davies sidelined for Canada’s historic opening match
The co-hosts will begin their campaign at Toronto Stadium without their influential leader, who continues to nurse a hamstring strain picked up during Bayern Munich’s UEFA Champions League semi-final against Paris Saint-Germain. Davies has featured in only two of Canada’s last 21 international fixtures due to a series of injuries, including a previous anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tear. Since joining the training camp on June 1, the captain has been following an individualised recovery programme separate from the main squad.
Marsch provides encouraging medical update
During a pre-match press conference ahead of Canada’s group opener, Jesse Marsch discussed the medical assessment of his captain and the reasoning behind the team’s cautious approach. The coach stated: “We did an MRI with him on Wednesday, and it showed very positive signs that he’s healing extremely well, almost completely. We’re preparing to increase his workload. He’s always demonstrated a remarkable ability to recover from muscle injuries.”
However, the former Leeds United boss stopped short of completely ruling Davies out for the remainder of the group stage, adding: “Having his personal physiotherapist with him has been a big advantage, ensuring that his body’s needs are addressed daily. We’re very hopeful that over the next few days and week, we can accelerate his progress and give him a chance to play a part soon.”
Bombito stays in squad despite recent injury
In a positive development for Canada, centre-back Moise Bombito has been retained in the final squad despite fracturing his leg while playing for Nice in October. Although young defender Luc de Fougerolles is expected to fill in initially, Marsch commended Bombito’s determination, saying: “He has made incredible progress over the past month, and especially during the last week, which made the decision to keep him in the group quite straightforward.”
“He’ll be ready to contribute tomorrow. He’s not yet at 100 percent but has reached his top speed. His performances in training show that he’s improving daily, both physically and in his football understanding.”
Key group stage challenges ahead
After their opening match against a disciplined Bosnia-Herzegovina side that knocked Italy out in the European play-offs, Canada will head to Vancouver for their remaining group stage encounters. The co-hosts will take on Qatar and Switzerland in successive fixtures that will decide their knockout stage hopes. Securing early points will be crucial, as the team’s defensive depth will be seriously tested until Alphonso Davies is fit enough to rejoin the action.
