DON'T MISS A MOMENT OF THE WORLD CUP
England head coach Thomas Tuchel has urged Elliot Anderson to “stay humble” as speculation mounts over the Nottingham Forest midfielder’s potential British record transfer to Manchester City. The 23-year-old, who is expected to anchor England’s midfield when they kick off their World Cup campaign against Croatia next week, has been the subject of intense transfer rumours. Tuchel, however, is keen that the player remains focused and unaffected by the noise surrounding his future.
Tuchel praises Anderson as ‘the full package’
Tuchel has openly expressed his admiration for Anderson, describing him as a complete footballer while speculation about a record-breaking move continues. Since making his international debut last September, Anderson’s profile has soared, and he has become an essential figure in England’s setup leading into the 2026 World Cup.
Following England’s 3-0 friendly win over Costa Rica, Tuchel was full of praise for the midfielder. “He’s a top player,” Tuchel said. “There’s nothing more to add; he’s the full package. I’m delighted he’s performing at this level and he’s a key part of our team.”
Man City reportedly nearing record-breaking deal
As reported by The Athletic, Nottingham Forest have stood firm over Anderson’s future, turning down a second major offer from Manchester City. The latest bid from the Etihad Stadium was believed to be worth a guaranteed £106 million, with add-ons potentially pushing the total to £120 million. Nevertheless, Forest are unwilling to approve any move unless it surpasses the current British transfer record of £125 million – the amount Liverpool paid for Alexander Isak last summer.
Tuchel, however, insists that the inflated price tag will not affect Anderson’s mindset. When asked about Manchester City’s approach, Tuchel responded: “No comment! He doesn’t seem affected. It was a great performance, so everything is fine.”
Tuchel keen for Anderson to stay humble amid transfer buzz
The England manager’s main focus is ensuring that Anderson retains the humility and work ethic that have defined his rise. Tuchel hopes that any potential move to Manchester City will not alter the 23-year-old’s character as he prepares for the most significant competition of his career.
Addressing the ongoing speculation and the staggering sums being discussed, Tuchel explained: “Even if – and that’s a big if – a transfer happens, I hope he stays the same person. Nothing changes overnight; he’s not suddenly a different player when he wakes up. People will try to surround him, but the reality is simple – he just changes clubs, and that’s part of football. I hope he stays the same – humble, motivated, and hungry to succeed.”
England camp remains focused ahead of opener
With the World Cup opener against Croatia approaching, Tuchel has been pleased with the discipline and concentration shown by Anderson and his teammates. Despite other players making high-profile moves – such as Anthony Gordon’s switch to Barcelona – the England boss believes his squad is fully focused on their preparation for the tournament in North America.
“I don’t want to talk too much about whether it’s a boost or not – what I see in training is complete focus and commitment; that’s what comes from him,” Tuchel said of Anderson. Speaking about Gordon’s transfer to Barca, he added: “I think it’s given him confidence, but I hope it doesn’t change his playing style because that’s exactly what Barcelona will want from him.”
