Portugal forward Rafael Leão will miss his country's final World Cup warm-up match after receiving a one-match suspension following a red card in a recent friendly against Chile. However, he remains eligible for Portugal's opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The incident occurred during first-half stoppage time of Portugal's friendly at Estádio Nacional in Oeiras. A strong challenge involving João Cancelo and Chile's Felipe Poundes led to a confrontation between players from both teams.
As tensions escalated, Chile defender Ivan Roman became involved in a dispute with Cancelo. Leão stepped in during the altercation and pushed Roman. The situation intensified further, and the referee ultimately issued red cards to both Leão and Roman following the confrontation.
The dismissal initially raised concerns about whether additional disciplinary action could affect Leão's participation in the World Cup. However, the suspension applies only to Portugal's final friendly against Nigeria, meaning the AC Milan attacker will be available for the tournament opener.
Following the match, Leão addressed the incident on social media. He stated that his intention was to protect a teammate and insisted he had no desire to harm an opposing player.
Portugal midfielder Bruno Fernandes also commented on the situation, praising the unity shown by the squad. He said Leão reacted after seeing Cancelo under pressure and emphasized the importance of teammates supporting one another as the team prepares for the World Cup.
Head coach Roberto Martínez expressed disappointment over the red card, noting that such situations can be costly in major tournaments. He stressed the importance of maintaining discipline and suggested the incident could serve as a reminder of the standards required during World Cup competition.
Portugal will complete their preparations with a friendly against Nigeria before beginning their World Cup campaign. Drawn in Group K alongside Colombia, Uzbekistan and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Portugal will open the tournament against the Democratic Republic of the Congo on June 18.
With the suspension limited to the final warm-up match, Leão remains available as Portugal prepares to begin its pursuit of World Cup success.
