David Dhawan's Final Film Marks a New Chapter

David Dhawan's latest project, Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai, signifies his departure from the film industry. This film will be his last as he steps away from directing.

At 76 years old, Dhawan reflects on his extensive career, stating, “I’ve directed 46 films, most of which have been well-received. I hope my final film resonates with audiences as well. I’ve invested my heart and soul into this project. For me, entertainment is the essence of cinema.”

Despite frequent suggestions to alter his filmmaking approach, Dhawan remains steadfast. He explains, “Why change a winning formula? My style has consistently worked. My mentor, Manmohan Desai, had his own unique approach, and when he deviated from it, he faced rejection.”

When asked about the significance of Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai in his body of work, he shares, “Is it my favorite? At this moment, yes. All my films hold a special place for me, even those that didn’t perform as well, like Yaarana and Mr & Mrs Khiladi. I always aim to connect with the audience's preferences.”

Discussing his collaboration with his son, Varun, Dhawan remarks, “Varun is incredibly talented and dedicated. If he weren’t, I wouldn’t choose to work with him. On set, we maintain a professional dynamic, and I tend to be stricter with him than with other actors.”

Looking ahead, Dhawan expresses his desire to spend quality time with his grandchildren and wife, activities he often neglected during his busy career. He also plans to indulge in watching numerous films, though he humorously notes, “Not my own.”
