The situation in Pakistan’s illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir (PoK) has once again become completely out of control. Very violent clashes took place on Monday between the protesters who took to the streets to press for their legitimate economic and political demands and Pakistani security forces. In this bloody conflict, 11 people, including four policemen and seven civilians, have died tragically, while more than 70 people are said to be seriously injured. The situation has become extremely tense in the entire Muzaffarabad and Rawalkot areas, in view of which the administration has hastily shut down mobile and internet services completely. The banned alliance ‘Joint Awami Action Committee’ (JAAC) fighting for civil rights in the region has called for a complete lockdown on Tuesday, to deal with which Pakistan has deployed its army.
Murder of a businessman sparks bloody battle outside Rawalkot Military Hospital
According to international news agency ‘PTI’, this latest dispute started last Friday, when a local businessman in Rawalakot got into an altercation with Pakistani policemen over some issue. As the dispute escalated, the police openly shot the businessman, resulting in his death. When his body was brought to the Combined Military Hospital (CMH) in Rawalakot, thousands of JAAC supporters and civilians gathered there. Within no time, the peaceful demonstration turned violent and a direct war between the security forces and the public started.
Attack with automatic rifles and petrol bombs, 6 protesters killed in retaliation by security forces
Giving information about the matter, Poonch Sector Commissioner Sardar Waheed Khan claimed that some anti-social elements in the crowd attacked the security forces with automatic rifles and petrol bombs, in which four policemen and a pedestrian died on the spot. After this, to control the situation, the security forces retaliated directly and opened fire, in which six protesters were killed. Police Chief Liaquat Malik said that so far 23 security personnel and 50 protesters have been seriously injured in this violent incident, while more than 100 people have been arrested for disturbing the atmosphere.
JAAC chief Shaukat Nawaz Mir’s big allegation – Government is massacring us in Rawalakot
On the other hand, according to news agency Reuters, JAAC chief Shaukat Nawaz Mir has made very serious allegations against the Pakistani government by releasing a video on the social media platform X. He said that the government in Rawalakot is massacring his peaceful supporters as part of a well-planned conspiracy. He made it clear that despite this bloody cycle of repression by the government, his organization is fully committed to the nationwide lockdown program proposed on June 9 and they will not back down. At the same time, famous geopolitical activist Amjad Ayub Mirza has demanded immediate intervention of the United Nations (UN) regarding this humanitarian and political crisis. He alleged that Pakistani Rangers, brutal Punjab Police and deadly command units of the Army are being used to crush the peaceful movement of Kashmiri people.
Real dispute over 12 assembly election seats, ultimatum to tourists to leave PoK
Actually, the main reason for this entire controversy is the regional assembly elections proposed in the year 2027. The main demand of JAAC is that out of the total 45 seats, the system of 12 seats reserved for refugees should be abolished immediately. The protesters allege that these 12 seats are won by fake candidates who do not actually live in this region, but are residents of Punjab and other parts of Pakistan and control the politics here at the behest of Islamabad. To suppress this protest, on Friday itself the regional government had declared JAAC a banned organization under the Anti-Terrorism Act (ATA). Along with this, the administration had issued a strict advisory to domestic and foreign tourists to leave the area before June 9 at all costs, citing security.
Biggest problem for Pakistan Army Chief General Asim Munir
Defense and political analysts believe that Pakistan’s military and political leadership is currently surrounded on many fronts. On one hand, Pakistan is facing huge security challenges on its western border from extremist organizations like Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) and Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA), on the other hand, this fierce public anger in Pakistan’s illegally occupied Kashmir (PoK) has emerged as the biggest headache for the country’s Army Chief Field Marshal Asim Munir. The Pakistani army, surrounded from all sides, is now resorting to violence to suppress this movement, due to which this fire may flare up further in the coming days.
