Liverpool, Chelsea and Barcelona are reportedly preparing to make a surprise move for Darwin Núñez, with the forward’s challenging stint at Al Hilal possibly set to conclude earlier than expected. As per a report from Mundo Deportivo, Al Hilal have been in talks with the Uruguayan striker’s representatives over a potential mutual termination of his contract following a disappointing campaign in Saudi Arabia.

The issue has come to a head since Núñez was removed from Al Hilal’s Saudi Pro League squad in February, primarily due to restrictions on the number of foreign players after Karim Benzema joined the club.

According to TalkSPORT, Núñez featured in only 24 matches and managed 14 goal contributions during his time in Saudi Arabia, despite earning approximately £400,000 per week.

The most intriguing aspect of the story is the striker’s reported wish to make a return to Anfield.

Núñez is said to be eager for a comeback to Liverpool, just a year after his departure in a transfer deal valued at around €50 million.

From a footballing perspective, the idea isn’t entirely implausible.

Last season, Liverpool occasionally lacked the intensity, power and direct running that Núñez regularly provided during his spell at the club.

Although his finishing was inconsistent, his relentless energy and movement often unsettled defenders.

Chelsea’s interest also makes sense if they are in search of a physically strong forward, whereas Barcelona are reportedly considering cost-effective attacking reinforcements.

For Barcelona, Núñez represents a potentially low-cost alternative as they continue to evaluate their attacking options.

However, financial constraints at Barcelona and the depth of Chelsea’s current squad could both pose significant hurdles.

In contrast, a return to Liverpool may appear more emotionally appealing—though it would ultimately depend on whether manager Andoni Iraola believes Núñez fits into his plans.

Liverpool are expected to weigh up the idea only if the financial aspects of the deal are reasonable. While Núñez is far from flawless, returning to a former club doesn’t always guarantee success.

Nevertheless, if he becomes available at a low cost or as a free agent, Liverpool might find it difficult to overlook the opportunity. At 26, Núñez still has his prime years ahead of him, and Anfield already knows well what he can bring to the team.
