Indian Super League Set for Major Overhaul with Clubs Taking Charge

The uncertainty surrounding the upcoming season of the Indian Super League (ISL) is beginning to resolve. A significant development is that all participating clubs are considering the establishment of a governing body to oversee the league's operations. This initiative comes after the clubs proposed to manage the ISL independently, a move that has received the endorsement of Union Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya.

Formation of a Task Force

Mandaviya has directed the All India Football Federation (AIFF) to convene a meeting with all clubs promptly to form a task force. This group will be responsible for devising a commercial and financial strategy for the ISL during its next assembly.

A New Management Approach

On Monday, representatives from the 14 ISL clubs met with the Union Sports Minister in Delhi, alongside AIFF President Kalyan Chaubey and other officials. During this meeting, the clubs proposed that they should take full control of managing the league. Reports indicate that the Sports Minister was quite receptive to this suggestion.

Financial Proposals from Clubs

The clubs have been encouraged to advance their plans and develop a financial blueprint for the next four years. They have proposed that each club contribute ₹1.1 crore annually to the federation, resulting in a total of ₹15.4 crore each year. This offer surpasses the ₹12.4 crore per year that Genius Sports, the initially considered management company, proposed.

Negotiations and Future Prospects

Former AIFF President Praful Patel has played a pivotal role in facilitating discussions among the parties involved, aiming to reach a consensus. He has also committed to assisting in securing a broadcaster for the league.

The clubs' primary concern is not with Genius Sports itself, but rather the lack of control over league organization. They have expressed reservations about a lengthy 20-year contract, advocating for a more flexible arrangement. The Sports Minister has aligned with their perspective, urging all stakeholders to take proactive steps to enhance the sports industry and economy in the country. He has called for the swift development of a new business model for the ISL.
