What is the Nightclub Incident Involving Ben Stokes and Gus Atkinson That Rocked England Cricket?
Cricket Gully | June 9, 2026 10:39 PM CST

England Test captain Ben Stokes and fast bowler Gus Atkinson are being investigated over an incident in a nightclub following England's Test victory against New Zealand at Lord's.

The incident has become a major talking point for English cricket and could lead to Stokes losing his captaincy and both men being dropped for the second Test against New Zealand.

The events unfold just months after the governing body introduced strict new rules following similar disciplinary issues on the Ashes tour. It had been reported that a midnight curfew was being implemented to reduce the chances of off-field incidents.

What Occurred at the Chelsea Nightclub?

The incident took place in the Rex Room nightclub in Chelsea, where Stokes and Atkinson were celebrating England's 115 run victory over New Zealand in the first Test.

Stokes had recently spoken out about giving up alcohol, but insisted he wanted to share "a proper beer with the boys".

Things are said to have spiraled out of control after a dispute between Atkinson and Saracens rugby player Totoa Auvaa. Members of the Saracens rugby team were present celebrating their domestic season ending.

Reports claim the disagreement then escalated to a physical level with the aforementioned Auvaa landing a punch which instead caught an England security manager, requiring treatment and stitches.

However it is also reported that the ECB is of the opinion that Atkinson and Stokes "were not the aggressors".

ECB Investigation Underway As Captaincy Questions Grow

The ECB released a statement confirming it is investigating an issue involving a breach of team protocol regarding the two players.

In an official statement, the board said:

"The ECB is currently investigating a breach of team protocols following the conclusion of the first Men's Test against New Zealand. Ben Stokes and Gus Atkinson were present at a nightclub in the early hours of Monday morning when an incident took place. We are currently seeking further information, and an announcement regarding the squad for the second Test will be made in due course."

Saracens rugby team also stated they were investigating the incident.

The club said:

"The club is currently establishing the full facts and is in contact with the relevant authorities and individuals involved. Once this process is complete, the matter will be reviewed and addressed appropriately."

Speculation is already mounting that the Stokes may be considering his resignation or be forced out depending on the result of the investigation, while there is also strong feeling in the country that both players could miss the second Test against New Zealand as the matter is investigated.
