Thomas Tuchel’s plans for the international break have taken a major setback as Declan Rice and Bukayo Saka have been sent back to Arsenal for medical evaluation. The pair, who only joined the England camp on Friday after being rested for the 1-1 draw with Uruguay, will not be available for the upcoming friendly against Japan. The Football Association confirmed their exit along with six other players, leaving the squad significantly reduced ahead of the Wembley matchup.
Arsenal players lead the list of withdrawals
The situation has come at a difficult time for Tuchel, who had hoped to reintegrate his senior players following a short rest period. Instead, Rice and Saka’s return to north London adds to Mikel Arteta’s growing list of injury worries. With the Premier League title race entering its decisive stage, Arsenal supporters will be anxious about the medical outcomes for two of their most influential performers.
Tuchel expresses concern over Noni Madueke’s injury
While the departures of Rice and Saka are understood to be precautionary, Noni Madueke’s situation has raised greater concern after he landed awkwardly on his left knee during the draw with Uruguay. The 24-year-old was forced off in the 37th minute following a strong challenge from Rodrigo Aguirre and was later seen leaving the stadium wearing a protective brace. It is a worrying development for the winger, who had been pushing to establish himself in Tuchel’s first-team plans.
Speaking about the incident, Tuchel admitted: “I’m concerned, of course, because he was a real difference-maker. He started the match really well, full of energy, and was eager to make an impact. It’s upsetting and hopefully, the injury isn’t serious. Against a side like Uruguay, who rely heavily on one-on-one duels, his ability to open up spaces could have been crucial for us — he’s that kind of player.”
Injury list grows with Stones and Wharton sidelined
The injury issues extend beyond the Arsenal contingent. Manchester City defender John Stones has also withdrawn from the squad after sustaining a calf problem. Stones was expected to start against Uruguay but complained of discomfort during the warm-up and was subsequently replaced. Crystal Palace midfielder Adam Wharton has also been released to his club for further treatment as the physical strain of the international break continues to mount.
Tuchel showed empathy toward Stones, commenting: “He’s really disappointed, and right now, he needs full support rather than additional pressure.” Other players to leave the squad include Fikayo Tomori, Dominic Calvert-Lewin, and goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale, though some of these changes are tactical adjustments as Tuchel seeks to give playing time to late arrivals.
New arrivals offer balance but expectations stay high
Despite the wave of exits, England’s preparations have been boosted by the return of captain Harry Kane and several other players who reported for duty on Friday. Morgan Rogers, Anthony Gordon, and Marc Guehi are among those expected to feature against Japan as Tuchel continues to fine-tune his side ahead of the World Cup. The manager had earlier clarified that he chose to divide the squad into two groups to better manage workloads during a demanding season.
The current squad now consists of 27 players, with defender Ben White remaining part of the setup despite receiving jeers from sections of the Wembley crowd during the Uruguay encounter. Making his first appearance since the 2022 World Cup, White endured a mixed performance — scoring England’s only goal before conceding the penalty that led to the South American equaliser. Tuchel will now need to lift team morale and find a winning combination against Japan without several of his key regulars.
