This recognition was bestowed by President Droupadi Murmu for their remarkable bravery, dedication, and operational excellence.
The awards were presented during the Defence Investiture Ceremony-2026 (Phase-I) at Rashtrapati Bhavan on Monday, attended by notable figures including Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh.
Assam's Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma expressed pride in the soldiers' achievements, stating that this honor reflects the highest ideals of national service. He extended heartfelt congratulations to both soldiers via social media.
Major Bhargav Kalita, serving in the Kumaon Regiment (50 Rashtriya Rifles), received the award for his exemplary leadership and bravery during counter-terrorism operations in Jammu and Kashmir.
President Murmu highlighted Major Kalita's recognition for his "unwavering courage, strategic planning, and outstanding leadership during a critical mission." The Indian Army noted that since October 2022, he has led multiple successful operations, resulting in the elimination of three terrorists and the capture of four associates.
On December 2, 2024, Major Kalita executed a surgical ambush against a high-profile terrorist responsible for the deaths of seven civilians and attacks on security forces, based on timely intelligence.
According to Army spokesperson Lt Col Mahendra Rawat, Major Kalita's award is a testament to his bravery and leadership in line with the esteemed traditions of the Indian Army.
Rifleman Dhurba Jyoti Dutta of 33 Assam Rifles was also awarded the Shaurya Chakra for his courageous actions during an ambush in Manipur.
President Murmu detailed that in September 2025, while returning from flood relief operations in Imphal Valley, Dutta's vehicle was ambushed. Despite sustaining multiple gunshot wounds and facing intense fire, he managed to drive his comrades to safety, showcasing exceptional bravery.
The gallantry awards highlight the valor and professionalism of Assam's servicemen, whose actions exemplify the highest standards of military service and sacrifice.
