Maharashtra Railway Projects | The state government has taken another big step towards making the transport system in Maharashtra safer, faster and modern. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Monday gave green light to 65 important railway infrastructure projects under ‘Maharashtra Rail Infrastructure Development Corporation’ i.e. MahaRail. Along with this, he has also expressed his resolve to make Maharashtra a completely “railway level crossing-free” state in the future.
Due to increasing urbanization, increasing number of vehicles and railway traffic in the state, huge traffic jams are created at railway gates at many places. Often the risk of accidents also increases. Emphasis will be placed on replacing railway gates with railway overbridges (ROBs), underpasses (RUBs) and pedestrian bridges. Chief Minister Fadnavis has directed the officials to give top priority to these works. Maharashtra Railway Projects

The 65 projects approved in this meeting are part of the first phase of the total 131 proposed works to be undertaken by ‘Maharel’. These works will be done on roads under the jurisdiction of Public Works Department and Urban Development Department. These projects are expected to make communication between cities and suburbs easier.
The Chief Minister has specifically asked to give priority to projects where the ‘Train Vehicle Unit’ (TVU) is between 25 thousand and 1 lakh. TVU is the product of the number of trains and vehicles passing through a railway gate in 24 hours. This dimension is used to determine the traffic density and the need for flyovers or underpasses at that location. Projects where there is more traffic and less need for land acquisition will be sanctioned first. Maharashtra Railway Projects
According to the information provided by the state government, a total of 80 railway infrastructure projects are proposed in urban areas of Maharashtra. Most of these 17 projects are going to be implemented in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. 15 projects are proposed in Pune, 13 in Nagpur, 5 each in Nashik and Amravati. The rest of the projects will be set up in other cities of the state. This will help in reducing the traffic congestion in many cities of the state in the future.
Chief Minister Fadnavis also pointed out the possibility of traffic jam problem near some of the newly constructed flyovers in Nagpur. He instructed the officials to plan ahead to avoid such problems in future. He also directed to construct a new railway flyover in place of the old bridge on the Amravati-Badnera route.
The government has started special preparations to ensure that there is no dearth of funds for these ambitious projects. The Chief Minister directed to raise funds through ‘HUDCO’ and explore options to reduce the cost of borrowing. Apart from this, it has also been ordered to create a separate mechanism for timely payment of payments for completed projects. Maharashtra Railway Projects
This decision is considered very important in terms of traffic safety and long-term development of the state. These projects will play an important role in reducing the number of accidents at railway gates, increasing the speed of traffic and saving the time of citizens.
