A big news is coming out to the visit of Delhi Chief Minister and Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK) chief C Joseph Vijay, who created history in Tamil Nadu politics and reached the top of power. Chief Minister Vijay’s very important meeting with senior Congress leader Sonia Gandhi and Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi on Thursday has been suddenly postponed. This high-profile meeting was scheduled to be held at 10 Janpath, the residence of the Congress high command, at 10 am on Thursday, but a decision was suddenly taken to postpone it late on Wednesday night. Although, the official reason for postponing the meeting has not been revealed yet, but sources claim that now this meeting can take place next week. Just a day before this (Wednesday), CM Vijay surprised everyone by meeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman. Vijay’s first visit to Delhi after the formation of the coalition government. Actor-turned-politician Vijay’s party TVK had emerged as the largest party in the recently concluded Tamil Nadu Assembly elections. After this, he formed a strong coalition government in the state with Congress, CPI, CPI-M, VCK and IUML. This is Chief Minister Vijay’s first visit to Delhi after easily proving majority in the Assembly (winning the trust vote) on May 13. This is the reason why the eyes of political analysts across the country were fixed on his meeting with the top leadership of his main coalition partner Congress. These 3 big issues of Tamil Nadu were raised boldly in front of PM Modi. On Wednesday, there was a conversation between PM Modi and CM Vijay in a cordial atmosphere for about 25 minutes at the Seva Teerth complex of the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO). During this courtesy call, Chief Minister Vijay submitted a detailed demand letter (memorandum) to PM Modi to protect the interests and rights of Tamil Nadu, in which 3 main issues were raised prominently: 1. Cauvery River and Mekedatu Project Controversy: Vijay expressed deep objection to the recent bhoomi pujan conducted by the Karnataka government for the Mekedatu Balancing Reservoir Project on the Cauvery River. He told PM Modi that this step of Karnataka is a blatant violation of the final decision of the Cauvery Water Dispute Tribunal (CWDT) and the orders of the Supreme Court, due to which there is huge anger among the farmers of Tamil Nadu. 2. Controversy over Tamil state anthem ‘Tamil Thai Vazhthu’: Vijay also raised with the PM the controversy over singing of Tamil Nadu’s state anthem at the third position after Vande Mataram and the national anthem during the swearing-in ceremony of the Chief Minister. He demanded that the Union Home Ministry (MHA) issue a clear guideline, so that states get official permission to sing their state songs at the beginning of government programs. 3. Arrest of Tamil fishermen by Sri Lankan Navy: Raising the issue of safety of fishermen, CM said that so far in the year 2026 alone, there have been 12 incidents of arrest of fishermen. At present, 58 fishermen from Tamil Nadu are lodged in Sri Lankan jails and their 266 boats have been confiscated. He urged the Center to put pressure on the Sri Lankan government to release them immediately. Asked for special economic package from Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman. After meeting the Prime Minister, Chief Minister Vijay reached the office of Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and also met her. During this, he demanded special financial assistance from the Center to speed up the infrastructure, economic and industrial development of Tamil Nadu. Vijay strongly urged for release of funds on priority basis for modernization of major ports of Tamil Nadu, new national highways, pending railway projects and industrial corridors. This Delhi visit of Joseph Vijay, who came to power by uprooting the bipolar dominance of Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK), which had dominated the politics of Tamil Nadu for decades, is being considered very revolutionary in terms of centre-state relations and the future politics of South India. Now it remains to be seen what strategy will be made to take the alliance forward in his meeting with Rahul and Sonia Gandhi next week.
