
An Air India flight bound for San Francisco returned to Delhi after developing a technical issue midair, forcing the aircraft to turn back after flying for more than eight hours.
Flight AI173, carrying around 230 passengers, departed from Delhi on May 27 aboard a Boeing 777-300ER. The aircraft began diverting after crossing into Chinese airspace and returned safely to the national capital. Air India confirmed that the plane landed without incident and will undergo a detailed technical inspection under its safety protocols.
The airline expressed regret for the inconvenience caused to passengers and assured that alternative travel arrangements were being made. Ground teams provided refreshments, hotel accommodation, and rescheduling options for travellers awaiting onward flights.
Flight-tracking data from Flightradar24 showed the aircraft remained airborne for over eight hours before landing back in Delhi. Sources said the technical issue was detected during the flight, prompting the crew to follow standard safety procedures and return.
Air India reiterated its commitment to passenger safety and operational reliability, stating that the aircraft will resume service only after thorough checks.
