Mumbai: Abhijeet Bhattacharya has strongly criticised the recreated version of the iconic song Chunnari Chunnari, which has been included in the album of the upcoming romantic comedy Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai. The singer expressed disappointment with the remake and said the original track featuring Salman Khan remains unmatched.
The original version of Chunnari Chunnari appeared in the 1999 film Biwi No. 1 and featured Salman Khan alongside Sushmita Sen. The song became one of the era’s most popular dance numbers and continues to remain popular among audiences.
The recreated version now stars Varun Dhawan along with Mrunal Thakur and Pooja Hegde.
Singer praises original version
Speaking about the original song’s impact, Abhijeet said Chunnari Chunnari was one of the biggest songs associated with Salman Khan’s career and had retained its popularity over the years.
He stated that the song continued to trend and remained memorable among audiences since its release. The singer recalled that Salman was still an emerging actor during that period but later grew into one of the biggest stars in the industry.
The comments came amid ongoing discussions among fans over remakes and recreated versions of classic Bollywood songs.
Sharp remarks aimed at Varun Dhawan
Abhijeet also made direct remarks comparing Varun Dhawan with Salman Khan while discussing the recreated version.
He suggested that the actor could not replicate the impact created by Salman Khan in the original track and argued that the two actors belonged to different spaces in terms of screen presence and image.
The singer further remarked that several projects associated with Varun Dhawan had drawn inspiration from previously successful films and songs.
The upcoming film itself carries a nostalgic connection, as its title has been inspired by another popular song from Biwi No. 1. Interestingly, both the original film and the new project have been directed by David Dhawan.
Abhijeet unhappy with remake treatment
The playback singer also criticised the overall treatment of the recreated song and said he was not impressed after hearing it.
He said the original version carried romance and performance elements that, according to him, were missing in the recreated track. Abhijeet added that he was pleased he had not been approached to sing the remake, stating that he would have reconsidered participating.
According to him, the original version involved significant performance value and emotional energy that contributed to its success.
Film set for release in June
Produced by Ramesh Taurani under Tips Films, Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai is scheduled to release on June 5.
The debate surrounding recreated songs has often divided audiences, with some appreciating updated versions for younger viewers while others prefer preserving the originality of classic tracks. Abhijeet’s comments have once again reignited discussions around remakes and the challenge of recreating iconic songs.
