Star Indian player HS Prannoy has created a big upset in the Singapore Open Super 750 badminton tournament. Prannoy has made it to the second round by defeating Jonathan Christie of Indonesia in a tough match in men’s singles on Wednesday (May 27). World Championship 2023 and Asian Games bronze medalist Prannoy won over the world number-5 player 10-21, 21-12, 21-18 in a match that lasted for more than an hour.
This is Prannoy’s first victory against Christie in the last five years. Earlier, he had defeated Christie in the 2021 Indonesia Open. Prannoy will now face former world champion Loh Kean Yew of Singapore in the next round.
Pranay made a strong comeback after falling behind
Prannoy made a slow start against Christie, allowing the Indonesian to lead 11–5 at the break. Christie then extended her lead to 16-9 and then won five of the next six points to take the first game. Prannoy made a strong comeback in the second game. He led 11-7 at the break and then did not give any chance to Christie and won the second game to make the score 1-1.
The third and deciding game saw a tough fight between the two players for every point. Initially Christie was ahead 6-3 but Prannoy made a comeback to make the score 13-11. In the midst of a tough contest, Christie took the lead 18-16 but the Indian player won the last five points and won the match. The Indian mixed doubles pair of Dhruv Kapila and Tanisha Crasto also reached the second round by defeating the Malaysian pair of Wong Tien See and Lim Chew Hsien 21-14, 20-22, 21-13.
Srikanth and Bansod got defeated
Kidambi Srikanth and Malvika Bansod were eliminated after losing in the first round itself. Former world number-1 and World Championship 2021 silver medalist Srikanth had to face defeat against local player Loh Kien Yu by 20-22, 21-19, 17-21. With this win, Loh Kien Yew avenged his defeat at the hands of the Indian player last week. Malvika, who was returning after injury, also lost 21-11, 19-21, 12-21 despite giving a tough fight to Lin Shiang Ti of Chinese Taipei.
