New Delhi, 27 May 2026: India’s first shooting gold medal winner Randhir Singh, senior Indian sports administrator and winner of India’s first shooting gold medal in the Asian Games, has passed away. At the age of 79, Randhir Singh breathed his last at his residence. He was admitted to the hospital for the last few days and was battling age diseases. The news of his death has spread a wave of mourning in the Indian sports world.

Randhir Singh resigned from the post of President of the Olympic Council of Asia on January 26, 2026. He was elected as the President of OCA for a four-year term in 2024. He has been associated with Asian and Indian sports administration for a long time and has played an important role in the development of sports.

History formed in 1978

Raja Randhir Singh was born on October 18, 1946 in a royal family in Patiala, Punjab. He created history by winning the gold medal in trap shooting at the Asian Games in Bangkok in 1978, becoming the first Indian shooter to achieve this feat. He also represented India in five consecutive Olympic Games from 1968 to 1984 and was honored with the Arjuna Award. After retiring from shooting, he pursued a successful administrative career and became one of India’s most influential sports officials.

He served as the Honorary Secretary-General of the Indian Olympic Association from 1987 to 2014. As Secretary-General of the Olympic Council of Asia from 1991 to 2015, he took the Asian Games to new heights. He also served as a member of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) from 2001 to 2014. In September 2024, he made more history when he elected Binharif to the post of President of the OCA, becoming the first Indian to do so. 45 Asian countries unanimously expressed confidence in him.
