England’s Issy Wong cherishes international comeback, bats for more Test cricket

Issy Wong returned to international cricket last week. The T20I against New Zealand at Canterbury was the seamer’s first match for England for almost a year. Now she is excited about the three-match T20I series against India, starting at Chelmsford on Thursday.

“When you spend that little bit of time away from the national team, it does make it that little bit sweeter coming back,” Wong told Sports stars over the phone. “Being able to represent your country and play cricket at the highest level is something that will always make me immensely proud.”

She believes the India series is huge. “Anytime India is in town, it is always really good,” the 24-year-old said. “The noise that surrounds it both, you know, with the media and, I guess, on the side of the pitch with the spectators is always heightened. It is a massive opportunity for us and massively exciting as well.”

The two countries will play a one-off Test at Lord’s in July. “I love test cricket,” she said. “I love it. I get that scheduling reasons and stuff, as it is pretty tricky to fit more into the schedule. The last few years we have seen a quite a sharp uptake of women’s Tests being played. I hope it continues.”

After the T20I series, England will be hosting the Women’s T20 World Cup. Wong feels it will be difficult to pick favourites.

“We just had a really competitive series against New Zealand, who are the reigning World champs at the moment,” she said. “We obviously know that the talents of Australia, India and South Africa are enormous. But, the brilliant thing about cricket is that it is an individual team sport, isn’t it? So, you know, any team is only one individual, brilliant performance away from beating anyone else.”
