Vigilance has also been increased in India amid the rapidly spreading Ebola virus infection in African countries. An Indian woman who returned from Uganda has been isolated at a government hospital in Bengaluru after she was found to have Ebola virus-like symptoms. However, at present there has been no official confirmation of Ebola infection in the woman.

According to health department sources, the woman had recently returned to India from Uganda. After the journey, he complained of mild body pain, after which he was kept under observation as a precautionary measure. The woman’s blood sample has been sent to the National Institute of Virology in Pune for testing. The report is awaited.

The Karnataka Health Department has issued special guidelines for people returning from Ebola-affected countries. The department has said that such passengers should do health monitoring and self-monitoring for at least 21 days. If any person shows fever, body ache, weakness or other suspicious symptoms, it is advised to immediately contact the nearest health center.

Rajiv Gandhi Chest Institute in Bengaluru has been identified as the isolation centre, while the Epidemic Diseases Hospital has been made the quarantine and treatment centre. Whereas in Mangaluru, Srinivas Port Hospital under New Mangalore Port Authority has been declared as quarantine center and Wenlock District Hospital as treatment centre.

The Government of India and State Health Departments are continuously monitoring the situation. Screening and surveillance has been increased at the airport and other entry points. The Health Ministry has appealed to the people that there is no need to panic and avoid rumours. The government has advised to rely only on official information.

Meanwhile, on May 17, the World Health Organization declared the Ebola outbreak spreading in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda a public health emergency of international concern.

Infection is continuously increasing in African countries. The highest number of cases have been reported in Congo, where so far 101 Ebola positive cases have been registered while more than 900 suspected cases have been reported. There is a possibility of infection spreading in many other countries including Uganda.

The Ebola virus is considered a serious and in many cases fatal infection, which can spread through contact with the body fluids of an infected person. Its symptoms may include high fever, body ache, weakness, vomiting, diarrhea and in severe cases, internal bleeding.

The infection has not been confirmed in India yet, but considering the global situation, health agencies seem to be alert about any possible threat.
