For the first time since 2006, members of Real Madrid will head to the polls to elect the club’s next president. Florentino Perez, who has been at the helm since 2009, has called for fresh elections and will face Enrique Riquelme, whose candidacy was officially confirmed over the weekend.
On Tuesday, the club’s electoral committee met with the specific aim of establishing the date for the upcoming vote. The intention has been to hold the election promptly so as not to disrupt the club’s ongoing operations. An official announcement has now confirmed that the voting will take place on Sunday, 7th June.
According to the statement, “The Electoral Board approves that the voting will be held on June 7, 2026, between 9:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m., without interruption, at the Basketball Pavilion of Real Madrid City, Avenida Alejandro de la Sota s/n – Madrid, where the corresponding polling stations will be installed. This information will be sent to all members listed in the electoral roll.”
Perez’s decision to call for elections follows two consecutive seasons without a major trophy for Real Madrid. The club’s fans have voiced strong dissatisfaction during matches, directing criticism at the president as well as key players such as Kylian Mbappe and Jude Bellingham.
Nevertheless, Perez remains the overwhelming favourite to secure re-election in 12 days’ time. Having overseen one of the most successful eras in the club’s storied history, he continues to enjoy considerable support among members. It will be a significant challenge for Riquelme to sway the loyal base of the 79-year-old incumbent.
If Perez is re-elected, he is expected to act swiftly in appointing Jose Mourinho as Real Madrid’s next manager. A deal is already in place for the Portuguese tactician to return to the Santiago Bernabeu, 13 years after his previous spell in charge. However, his formal arrival has been delayed pending the outcome of the election.
